The Tomasso Starace Quintet

Wade Street Church Hall, Lichfield

Monday February 11th 8.30pm

Tomasso Starace

Lichfield Arts opens its Spring Jazz season with an outstanding concert featuring the star-studded Tomasso Starace Quintet playing the music of Michael Petrucciani.

Tomasso needs little introduction to his Lichfield fans having played the Guildhall and also the Jazz & Blues Festival in recent years.

Beside Tomasso on Saxes will be outstanding trumpeter Damon Brown plus a brilliant rhythm section of Lawrence Cottle bass, Chris Nichols drums and Italian star pianist Michele Di Toro. They will re-create the unique energy of Petrucciani’s creative music with virtuoso playing, matched by a hard-bop style, creating swinging, melodic jazz with a great vibe.

A Lichfield Arts spokesman said “We are extremely fortunate to have such an outstanding band play at this intimate venue - it will be night to savour“.

The concert starts at 8.30pm. Tickets are available online at www.lichfieldarts.org.uk or telephone the box office on 01543-262223

Russ Escritt RUSS ESCRITT - JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHER

The passing of Jazz photographer Russ Escritt is sad news for all Jazz lovers across the region . Russ produced many iconic images of local, national and international Jazz musicians who played at venues across the region. One particular favourite of mine was a black and white photo of legendary Blue Notes pianist Sam Brown at the Bear Tavern back in the 1990s.

Russ shot a huge body of work at Andy Hamilton’s Jazz at the Bear and later at the Bearwood Corks Club and in many ways, that Russ should die in the same year as Andy Hamilton, marks the end of an era. However for myself and many others they both live on in the photo Russ took of Andy at the Corks which now looks down on proceedings at the club from the left of the stage. I was deeply flattered that he should like this crafty photo I sneakily took of him at the Symphony Hall.

Deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Jenny and to all his family and friends.

More tributes to Russ appear on The Jazz Breakfast and on the Flickr site of Garry Corbett, friend and fellow Jazz photographer who took this photo.

The Funeral Service will on Wednesday 28th November be at the Sandwell Valley Crematorium, Newton Road, West Bromwich, B71 3SX at 12.15pm and a reception will follow at the Symphony Hall Leve 4 Foyer Bar, time 1.30 to 3.30pm

Books of Russ’s photography can be purchased on Blurb. They’re well worth getting.

  Hello everyone

I’m often asked “what is Jazz”, I think Satchmo said it best, “If you gotta ask, you’ll never know”.

I must apologies for the errors in last months magazine, 4 Oakes Big Band especially there was more than one error and I do apologies most sincerely.

Remi Harris is an exciting young guitarist from the UK. He is regarded as one of the UK’s top Gypsy Jazz Guitarists and has played with the likes of John Etheridge, Gary Potter and Tina May. You can see him this month at Worcester Jazz Club and The Trumpet, Bilsdon.

The Trumpet Bilsdon, with jazz 8 times a week, there’s something for everyone. November sees a return visit by Ben Holder. For those with a leaning towards the more Trad Jazz, there’s a second visit from the New Charleston Footwarmers, who went down so well on their first appearance at The Trumpet.

Corks Club is being rebranded as Silvershine Jazz Club after the best selling album by their founder Andy Hamilton MBE

Of course there’s lots more - We also have an exciting new venue to visit in the city centre. Chung Ying Garden, restaurant China Town. They will be hosing live music on Friday and Saturday nights. till Mid December.

If they get the support they will continue in the new year. This is so important for local music, a decent restaurant, no additional admission cost other than the meal and drinks, and a regular City Centre spot for jazz.

Enjoy !!

Silvershine Jazz @ Bearwood Corks Club

New departure for trumpet and tenor duo Jamie Brownfield and Liam Byrne.

Brownfield Byrne Hot 6

The once bebop purists have now turned their attentions to earlier jazz styles taking inspiration from Bix and Tram rather than Bird and Dizzy. Their new band, the Hot 6, play the kind of jazz that really swings and doesn’t give you a headache. Featuring a rhythm section including such luminaries as Tom Kincaid, Andy Hulme, Jim Swinnerton and Jack Cotterill, they play classic jazz, as in everything from New Orleans through the tin pan alley classics, the swing era, and mainstream jazz recalling the classic small groups of the 1930’s.

Jamie has a prodigiously broad style running the gamut of jazz trumpet while Liam has a growing reputation as a torchbearer of the jazz tenor saxophone tradition, inspired by the likes of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. Tom is one of the UK’s foremost jazz pianists with an infectious style in the mould of Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson, and Andy’s playing reflects the roots of jazz guitar, echoing Charlie Christian and Freddy Green.

The band is completed by Jim and Jack’s energetic rhythm playing.

Approaching traditional jazz with an open-mind and with an emphasis on quality and a genuine respect for the tradition, the Brownfield Byrne Hot 6 hope to keep this art form alive and intact well into the future.

The Charleston Chasers, a ten-piece band who are led by percussionist and vocalist Debbie Arthurs, play hot vintage music like you have never heard before! The Chasers, formed in 1987, are the spearhead band for music from the Art Deco era, so it was no surprise when they were chosen to play at the launch party for the Art Deco Exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Some 800 invited guests were returned to the great age of artistic and musical creativity and, to great acclaim, The Chasers drove new life into old numbers.
