Trust you have all had a
good summer.
I certainly have!!
“The Steve King Big Band 60th Birthday Tour“ arrives at Solihull Arts Complex on Sunday 21st September.
Steve has run the band for almost 45 years making it one of the longest existing big bands around. It still has several members who have been with the band over 40 years plus a sprinkling of the area’s young jazz talent.
With a regular line-up including tuba and percussion, plus a multi doubling woodwind section, the band offers a unique twist on the big band repertoire.
Tickets are available from the box office on 0121 704 6962”
THE BLUES ARE BACK IN BRUM...
...That is, if they ever went away. From September 23rd, Tuesday will be Bluesday at The Asylum 2 with some of the finest Blues bands about, digging into the urban and country Blues of Chicago and The Delta and stopping off at all points between.
The opening party will feature The 58’s Blues Band, followed in successive weeks by Grey Goose Blues Band, Peoples Republic of Mercia, Steve Ajao Blues Giants, The Whiskey Brothers and Paul Stedman Blues Band – and there will be more to follow.
The Asylum 2 is Brum’s coolest Blues bar and lies adjacent to its big brother, The Asylum, on Hampton Street in Hockley.
Congratulations to the Bank Street Syncopators who raised £600 for the Rugby Food Bank at their concert at the Railway Social Club in Rugby.

It’s May already and...
...there’s plenty of good Jazz to
keep you entertained
this month!
One not to be missed is The Fryer Barnhart International All Star Band at Solihull Arts Centre on Mon 19 2014.
American jazz musicians Jeff Barnhart and Jim Fryer are joined by our very own George Huxley, Gordon Whitworth and Brian Mellor, plus Nick Ward – drummer and Jennie Hawkins, the only exponent of the ‘smiling and slapping bass’ The group was founded in 1999 and has performed all over the UK and in select locations on both coasts of the US.!
The repertoire includes hot music of the 20s and 30s from Bechet and Armstrong to Morton and Waller.
Bryn Venus sadly passed away on April 4th.
The “ jazz family” has lost a true gentleman and an irreplaceable musical talent. Bryn was generous in every sense both with time and willingness to help and encourage anyone to develop their musical talent.
His home was always open to any musician, rehearsals / jam sessions were frequent. We shall not see his like again.
Condolences to Pat and the family, from the jazz fraternity
