13th January 2016
Garrick Studio Theatre

Christine Tobin is starting a monthly programme at the Garrick Theatre in Lichfild in 2016 featuring singers and musicians from the UK jazz circuit set in the intimate settings of the Studio Theatre.

Can you believe it
I am promoting gigs for 2016 already!

The Oxfam Stomp

The charity event where bands play for nothing (not even expenses),at well-appointed Kings Heath Cricket Club, with real ale and hot food readily available.

The Stomp is a social event as much as a musical one: musicians and fans who sometimes haven’t met over the previous year get together for a drink, a chat and a laugh. The 2016 Stomp will be especially significant as not only is it the 50th,but it may also turn out to be the final one, it depends upon whether sufficient volunteers
come forward to keep it going.

Lichfield Garrick

Lichfield Garrick is starting a monthly Jazz programme from January. The idea is to showcase the best in UK jazz, bringing some of the finest musicians to the intimate settings of the Lichfield Garrick Studio.

Newport Jazz Club

A new monthly Jazz venue for you in Newport at The Royal British legion.

A big thank you to Jazzwestmids team;

  • Ian Wright - Graphic Designer,
  • Dick Jones - for maintaining our web site,
  • Barry Semp - for compiling the listings,
  • Wendy Kirkpatrick - for help with the distribution.

 Best wishes for Christmas
and the New year!...

OXFAM STOMP
The Oxfam Stomp is the best known Trad Jazz event in the West Midlands. It’s been been held annually every year since then, but is in need of more volunteers if it’s to survive into 2017. They sent us the following article about the event:

“The Oxfam Stomp was the brain-child of John Minnion - amiable Machiavellian, tireless champion of good causes and man-about-jazz . Back in the mid-1960s John was running the Salutation Jazz Club, specialising in New Orleans-style and Classic jazz. John thinks the first Stomp may in fact have been held in 1965, to raise funds for various charitable causes and then in 1966 it became the Oxfam Stomp, raising funds for that particular organisation.

From the beginning there was a strict rule that the bands played for nothing (not even expenses), which meant that with a few heroic exceptions over the years (notably the wonderful Annie Hawkins), the participants have been Midlands-based bands. Early supporters included Danny Pawson's Artesian Hall Stompers, the Preservation Hall Band (from Shrewsbury, of course!) and the Zenith Hot Stompers. Over the years Ken Ingram, Norman Field and Paul Munnery became familiar faces at successive Stomps. More recently, stalwarts have included George Huxley's All Stars, Matt Palmer's various outfits and the New Georgia Band. For the last ten years, in addition to the bands appearing in the main room, a simultaneous jam session has taken place in a second room. After many venues or varying degrees of dilapidation over the years, for the past three years the Stomp has been held at the friendly and well-appointed Kings Heath Cricket Club, with real ale and hot food readily available.

The Stomp is a social event as much as a musical one: musicians and fans who sometimes haven't met over the previous year get together for a drink, a chat and a laugh. The 2016 Stomp will be especially significant as not only is it the 50th, but it may also turn out to be the final one (that depends upon whether sufficient volunteers come forward to keep it going).

Apologies to the many musicians, bands and volunteers who I have not mentioned due to space considerations and/or failing memory. Hope to see you all on January 8th!”

The next Oxfam Somp is at King’s Heath Cricket Club at 7.30pm on Friday 8th January. £10 on the door, £8.50 advance sales (0121 444 1362 or 07518 822312). ALL PROCEEDS GO TO OXFAM.

Hello
Got some exciting news for you...

...renowned Netherlands band ‘The Busquitos’ are set to present a unique, one-off UK performance – in Birmingham on Tuesday 27th October at El Borracho de Oro on Harborne Road in Edgbaston.

The Busquitos are real flag-wavers for Netherlands music, and have appeared on international promotion tours all over the world.

Congratulation To Garry Lewis on the success of his event at The Science Museum. I heard that Don Mather and his band were exceptional, All in all Gary another memorable night.

The next annual Oxfam Stomp, in January 2016 will be the 50th and may be the last, as some of the present organisers feel the time has come to call it a day.

A final decision has not yet been made, and will depend upon whether a viable new organising committee can be assembled. Anyone who is interested in getting involved should contact Jim Denham on 0121 451 3427.

Best wishes to Sheila Waterford, who is currently recuperating from major Heart Surgery and Mustie at The Trumpet, who is also recovering from a serious illness. I am sure you will all join me in wishing them a speedy recovery.
